Srinagar, May 3: Jammu and Kashmir’s oldest political formation, National Conference, has taken a dig at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the saffron party for delaying Assembly Elections in the Himalayan region.
Vice-president of the National Conference and former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the BJP does not want assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir as it fears performing badly in the polls.
Junior Abdullah is of the view that it was unlikely that the BJP would pave the way for conducting assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
“The BJP is not ready for assembly elections because they know they are going to lose the elections. They don’t have the courage to face the people. We are also not ready to beg for the polls. If they hold the elections, well and good! If they don’t, so be it!†Abdullah told reporters in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on May 2.
“It is obvious that the Centre has not given a green signal to the Election Commission for elections in J-K because the BJP does not want elections, he added.
Omar Abdullah criticised the role being played by the Election Commission in recent years.
“The Election Commission has not taken a call of its own in recent years. Whenever it has taken a decision, it is in consultation with the Centre,†Omar Abdullah asserted.
