Mehbooba Responds to Modi
Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and president People’s Democratic Party [PDP], Mehbooba Mufti, on Saturday urged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Federal government to reflect on whether India truly embodies the principles outlined in the Constitution.
She was responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s August 15 speech in which he requested all political parties to support the implementation of women’s reservation in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies without turning it into a political battle.
Mehbooba Mufti argued that a women’s reservation bill was already passed by the Indian Parliament in 2023.
“The (women’s) reservation bill has been passed; it simply needs to be implemented,” she said.
“The BJP government should introspect if, after 80 years of India’s independence, the dream of India as envisioned in the Constitution has been realised,” she told reporters after attending the August 15 function at Srinagar’s Bakshi Stadium.
“The Constitution of India given by Ambedkar in consultation with Congress leaders of the time envisioned no discrimination based on caste, creed or colour. It also provides for justice for all,” she concluded.
