Police begins inquiry into fake JEE Topper Claim by SKIE Coaching Center in Kashmir

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police has started an inquiry into the fake JEE topper claim by a coaching center in Srinagar which drew sharp public backlash against the coaching centre.

The incident rocked the education sector of the valley on April 17 when SKIE coaching centre, operated in Srinagar’s Parraypora, claimed that one of its students had topped the JEE Mains Exam.

The claim, however, turned out to be fake, when media and police inquired into the National Testing Agency’s results declared on April 21. The QR Code Scan of the marks sheet showed the correct results, while the “tempered” marks sheet had shown the student as topper in Jammu and Kashmir among females.

A senior police official said they have started an inquiry into the controversial and fake claim which “was meant to lure innocent students and parents to the coaching centre.

“We are inquiring into the fake claim. Several persons including the SKIE coaching centre owner linked with the claim have been questioned. The probe is on,” a senior police official said.

Sources said that while thousands of students were enrolled for coaching in the SKIE for a “hefty fee”, only four of its students had qualified JEE Mains and none of them had topped the exam.

While the student had blamed the NTA for “technical glitch”, the coaching centre admitted it was “their mistake for not cross checking the NTA results”.

Jammu and Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bhiduri had also told the media that the “competent authority is aware of the claim and is taking action”.
