Restoration of J&K’s Statehood Not a Favour: JKNC
Share

Srinagar, 22 July: The Jammu & Kashmir National Conference [JKNC] on Wednesday repeated that the restoration of J&K’s statehood was a constitutional obligation, not a favour to the people of the region.

This was states by JKNC’s provincial president Showkat Ahmad Mir.

In a statement, Showkat Mir said the continued delay in the restoration of statehood has “deepened public disappointment”.

But, he added, it has “strengthened the resolve of the people to pursue their democratic rights through peaceful and constitutional means.”

He said the JKNC exercised patience for nearly two years after assuming power in late 2024, trusting the repeated assurances given by the top leadership in Delhi regarding the restoration of statehood, the promise has been met to date.

“Statehood is not a favour to be granted at convenience. It is a constitutional commitment and the democratic right of the people of Jammu & Kashmir,” Showkat Mir reiterated, adding, “This assurance was given before Parliament, reiterated before the people and affirmed before the Supreme Court. The time has come to honour that commitment in both letter and spirit.”
